Website Updates
Jan. 18th, 2026 03:11 pmArtists of Destruction, Coracle Shores, Crystal Wood, Strike of the Thunderbirds, and The Wandering are all up on the Serial Poetry page. These are all small series with just a few poems, but they can grow if readers like them enough to prompt for more. Big thanks to
fuzzyred for posting these.
Climate Change
Jan. 18th, 2026 02:48 pmStudy explains longstanding mystery of why trees don't grow faster when CO2 levels are high
The authors are clear that their framework is a foundation, not a finish line. It explains a big, stubborn piece of the puzzle – the coupling of CO2 gain to water loss – and does so at the leaf-to-tree scale where decisions are made.
The next challenge is scaling those decisions up into regional and global climate models without smoothing away the very dynamics that matter.

Birdfeeding
Jan. 18th, 2026 01:53 pmToday is cloudy and cold.
I fed the birds. A few sparrows approached as soon as I put seed in the fly-through feeder.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 1/18/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.
EDIT 1/18/26 -- I did more work around the patio.
EDIT 1/18/26 -- I put out a fresh peanut suet cake.
I've seen a flock of sparrows and two male cardinals.
EDIT 1/18/26 -- I did more work around the patio.
I am done for the night.

Creative Jam
Jan. 17th, 2026 10:21 pmWelcome to the 150th Crowdfunding Creative Jam! This session will run Saturday, January 17-Sunday, January 18. The theme is "Memories."
Crowdfunding Creative Jam
Everyone is eligible to post prompts, which may be words or phrases, titles, images, etc. Prompters may request a specific creator, but everyone else may still use that prompt if they wish. Prompts may specify a particular character/world/etc. but creators may use the prompt for something else anyway and post the results. Prompters are still encouraged to post mostly prompts that anyone could use anywhere, as this maximizes the chance of having creators make something based on your prompt. Please title your comment "Prompt" or "Prompts" when providing inspiration so these are easy to find.
Prompt responses may also be treated as prompts and used for further inspiration. For example, a prompt may lead to a sketch which leads to a story, and so on. This kind of cascading inspiration is one of the most fun things about a collective jam session.
Everyone is eligible to use prompts, and everyone who wants to use a given prompt may do so, for maximum flexibility of creator choice in inspiration. You do not have to post a "Claim" reply when you decide to use a prompt, but this does help indicate what is going on so that other prompters can spread out their choice of prompts if they wish.
Creators are encouraged, but not required, to post at least one item free. Likewise, sharing a private copy of material with the prompter is encouraged but not required. Creative material resulting from prompts should be indicated in a reply to the prompt, with a link to the full content elsewhere on the creator's site (if desired); a brief excerpt and/or description of the material may be included in the reply (if desired). It helps to title your comment "Prompt Filled" or something like that so these are easy to identify. There is no time limit on responding to prompts. However, creators are encouraged to post replies sooner rather than later, as the attention of prompters will be highest during and shortly after the session.
Some items created from prompts may become available for sponsorship. Some creators may offer perks for donations, linkbacks, or other activity relating to this project. Check creator comments and links for their respective offerings.
Prompters, creators, and bystanders are expected to behave in a responsible and civil manner. If the moderators have to drag someone out of the sandbox for improper behavior, we will not be amused. Please respect other people's territory and intellectual property rights, and only play with someone else's characters/setting/etc. if you have permission. (Fanfic/fanart freebies are okay.) If you want to invite folks to play with something of yours, title the comment something like "Open Playground" so it's easy to spot. This can be a good way to attract new people to a shared world or open-source project, or just have some good non-canon fun.
Boost the signal! The more people who participate, the more fun this will be. Hopefully we'll see activity from a lot of folks who regularly mention their projects in this community, but new people are always welcome. You can link to this session post or to individual items created from prompts, whatever you think is awesome enough to recommend to your friends.

Today's Adventures
Jan. 17th, 2026 05:27 pmToday we went to the Otto Center in Arthur. Normally the third Saturday of each month is their craft show, and that's how it was marked earlier. It turned out to be a small farm and homestead show, with different vendors and a few folks we recognized. So that was interesting.

Birdfeeding
Jan. 17th, 2026 12:09 pmToday is cloudy and cold. Yesterday we saw several skeins of geese, but they were mostly flying east or west rather than north; go figure.
I fed the birds. I've seen a flock of sparrows and a male cardinal.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 1/17/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.
EDIT 1/17/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Philosophical Questions: Democracy
Jan. 17th, 2026 01:00 amPeople have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.
Considering that the technology exists to enable a real democracy, would a true democracy (every single person can vote on every single legislation) be advantageous or detrimental?

Greenland Defense Front
Jan. 17th, 2026 12:42 amI found these videos today. Do not watch with mouth full.
Greenland Defense Front - The Hungry Giant (Official Music Video)
I love the hell out of this and wish any of that imagery would appear on a T-shirt. It is right up there with Der Fuhrer's Face.
Democratic Penguins Republic - Space Program (Official Music Video)
Here's a fantastic filk song.

2025 Photos
Jan. 16th, 2026 10:04 pmThese are the photos that I uploaded in 2025, mostly pictures from my yard or local nature sites. See my Photo tag on Dreamwidth.
• 1401 photos
• Created 03.01.2025
• Updated 26.12.2025
Wow, that's a lot. :D It's nowhere near all of them, even all of the ones good enough to share.
These are the ones I selected to share in Three for the Memories as my most memorable (not most aesthetic or most technically ept) from 2025.

New Year's Resolutions Check In
Jan. 16th, 2026 07:46 pmWe made it through the second week of January. This is enough to get a better grasp of progress with New Year's resolutions. It's also into the period of rapid die-off. We have reached the second Friday in January, also known as Quitter's Day because so many people give up their New Year's resolutions then. See also the parallel check in post over on
goals_on_dw.
Feel free to copy the idea of a New Year's resolution check-in to your blog or other venue, to encourage yourself and your friends. Many people find that social support helps maintain resolutions. This is one area where online activity works as well as or better than facetime activity. Apps work too, with trackers for most popular goal categories. Consider the pros and cons of getting your friends to help. Here on Dreamwidth we have
awesomeers and
do_it that may prove helpful for social support of goals. Some craft communities like
get_knitted and
justcreate also have check-in posts.
According to an email from Facebook, the survey found that those who shared their New Year's resolution on Facebook were 36 percent more likely to stick to it. Additionally, 52 percent of those surveyed agreed that sharing their resolutions with others is helpful when it comes to accomplishing them. In my experience, saying (or posting) things out loud definitely makes them feel more real. Plus, if other people know about a goal you're trying to achieve, it may motivate you to keep working at it so you can provide future updates on your progress.
