::This was inspired by a prompt from the wonderful and amazing
fuzzyred Set loosely in the polychrome heroics verse (Story date TBD)::
The four children piled in excitedly as Jasmine and Shaela set up the room.
Their usual Sunday routine had gotten off to a good start. Kilani, Keanu, Tamya and Skyler were all here, and Sky had even remembered to bring her cards and her Vidwatch so she could Splat Chat with the others when needed. It had been an interesting challenge to figure out how to include the mute child among the talkers, but it was fun.
“We have tiny brownies and mini muffins this week kids,” Shaela said, as she set down the plates in the middle of the children’s table.
“Kilani, you wanted the mango peach, correct?”
The girl nodded, “May I be seated, miss?”
“You may.” Jasmine, the hostess for the week spoke for the first time. Her job was to make sure correct manners were followed; Shaela was the one serving this time. One by one the other children asked, and were seated. The little tea dresses chosen made a colorful display. Kilani was in a grass skirt; Keanu was in a tiny tux, Tamya wor white trimmed in cream to set of her darker skin, and Sky wore the trademark blue trimmed in red. She loved looking like her name-sake. This time she wore raincloud barrettes in her hair to match the mood of the weather outside.
Shaela poured Tamya’s Strawberry-pineaple, Keanu’s mint, Kalani’s Mango-peach and Sky’s Earl Gray.
They picked brownies and muffins, and fell to eating and chattering.
Shaela had to chuckle. They were just learning about different tea customs in different countries around the world. It surprised her how much both Sky and Keanu knew about some of them. Especially where the Chinese tea ceremonies were concerned.
This was one of her favorite times of the week. Helping the children learn and grow, and listening to Jasmin’s quiet guidance on being well-mannered aided her as well. It had been hard growing up in a family where you were different, and never felt as if you belonged. Being able to include others who were different made Shaela happy; Sky knew now that she could come here and be included, and be a part of things like any other person. She needed that. Now more than ever.
“Don’t forget to excuse yourself when your done, children.” Jasmine laughed as Keanu sat back down. “Your parents will be here soon. It’s already been half an hour.”
The chorus of “Aw man,” and “already?” filled the room, followed by the more polite asking to be excused. The clean up was Shaela’s job; Jasmine would make sure the kids were washed and regroomed.
It was quiet again once they left, and Shaela and Jasmine relaxed on the couch, both grinning like schoolgirls. “I’m glad you suggested this, dearheart.” Jasmine grinned, “It’s so much fun having the little ones here. It makes me feel so much better after a long week.”
“Hearing you guide them,” Shaela leaned her head on Jasmine’s shoulder, “It helps me, too. It is a good thing, Jasmine. For all of us. For all of us.”
Jasmine nodded, “My favorite memories are becoming these Sunday teas. Such small joys. Such a big impact. I am just glad they have this to look forward to, as well.”
Shaela nodded, “Helping them relax brings me just as much joy as you guiding them brings you. I can feel it. It helps. They may not realize it yet, but it does.”
Jasmin nodded, cuddling Shaela closer. “How about we have our own tea, Love, yes? With a little something extra, hmm?”
Shaela grinned, “I am so down with that, my love, I am so down with that.”
